X-T1 ... autofocus works different with different buttons ...

Recommended Posts

Anyone know why (or how to correct) the huge difference in autofocus speed between the ultra-fast shutter button and the sluggish AF-L button?  I like to use the AF-L to lock focus and then take images when my subject isn't moving (so I use it quite a bit in the type of photography I do).  But the difference in speed (I almost always use single point autofocus) is massive between the AF-L and shutter button.

If this is a known feature that is going to be 'corrected' in the FW 4.0 then awesome.  But if not ... it would be nice to bring it to the attention of Fuji.  :)

Thanks!

The AF-L button can be program to work differently. Check your menu setting user manual pg 61

"Use G AUTOFOCUS SETTING > INSTANT AF

SETTING to choose whether the camera focuses using single or continuous AF (P 78)."

Focussing wide-open with Instant-AF can take longer, but is more accurate. I'd actually welcome an option that allows me to set the shutter button focus to wide-open. Takes longer, but provides a more reliable DOF zone (at least with fast lenses). In any case, Instant-AF now also supports PDAF, which will increase the speed with firmware 4 (better PDAF sensitivity).

Thank you for the reply x-tc but I don't believe that is the correct setting for me question.  That will improve auto focus when in continuous focusing mode.  I'm always in single focusing mode and already had that option set in the menu.  For some reason autofocus speed differs (when in single mode) between the shutter release button and the AF-L.

I put my camera in manual and use the AF-L button to lock in focus.  I haven't noticed that it's any faster or slower, but it just works better for me to do it this way.  You just can't forget to push it again if you move your feet to zoom your lens.  Best part is that you don't have to keep recomposing because you've locked your focus and it's in manual.  I just hate having to hold the shutter halfway all the time.

Anyway, I prefer it.  You might give it a try.

For many years now, Instant AF has been a feature of (many) Fuji cameras, and it always behaved differently from focusing by half-pressing the shutter release button. This is by design.
