Fuji XE1 & 90mm F2?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I own a rather old XE1 and consider to buy a new lens. At the moment I shot mainly with the XF23mmF1.4 and have the 18-55 kit-zoom as well. I want to have a lens for "discrete" street photography and occasional portraits. The 90mmF2 seems to be very appealing to me. However, I'm not sure if the XE1 can handle the rather new lens. Does anybody tried this combo?

At the moment I favour the 90mmF2 over the 56mmF1.2 because of its supposedly faster autofocus. As the XE1 is not a real monster in this field I didn't want to slow it down more by considering a supposedly slow 56mm1.2 lens.

(At the moment I'm considering an upgrade of the camera as well, however I want to wait how XPRO2 performs for most "ordinary" users and maybe until XT2/XE3 will hit the market. The step between XE1 and XE2 seems not to be big enough to spent more money extra. I'd rather want to update my lenses in the meantime. )

What do you think - what are your experiences?

thanks!

A slight offtopic, however, my thoughts on the gap between X-E1 and X-E2.

The X-E2 is said to be very similar if not identical to X-T10 inside-wise.

I have tested the X-T10 with my lenses, the 18/2, 55-230 and the new 35/2 as well - and to be honest, it seems like I am having not only a different camera, but completely new lenses too.

The AF is much quicker, more precise - especially in the case of 18/2. The difference is noticeable immediately.

So what I did? The day the X-E2 firmware update was announced, I sold my X-E1 for about 200 euros, and picked up an X-E2 from ebay for under 400 euros, with the original leather half case included.

My advice would be to do the same, while the X-E1 has at least some value. I would also expect the X-E2 prices to remain at the present level or even increase, as the incentive of getting an X-T10 diminishes.

I sold my X-E1 about 1 1/2 years ago and bought after buying an X-T1 so I cannot answer as to how the 90mm works on the X-E1. The 90mm does feel a little quicker focusing than the 56mm. The 90mm doesn't really feel quicker than the 23mm, at least to me. I also picked up the X-E2 as a second Fuji body. It is quicker than the X-E1 and the claims are when firmware 4 is released in a few days it will equal to the X-T10 in performance. Seeing that the X-T10 is said to be as quick in AF to the X-T1, this should make the upgrade justifiable.

Thanks for your recommendations. So far I didn't consider the minor upgrade to XE2.

This would mean that I don't need a new C1, as XE2 RAWs are already supported. And with respect to size I would stay in "known waters". However, what I hear about the Xpro2 is really nice. I wouldn't expect to get money for my XE1 - was used a lot for traveling to the desert, cycling tours etc...

    • I'm having trouble finding a way to attach a right-angle viewfinder to the Fuji X-H1 camera. Does anyone have experience with how the angle viewfinder behaves in combination with the EVF? Is the Minolta frame diameter of the right angle viewfinder suitable for attaching to the Fuji XH1 (or XT1, 2, 3, 5)? Does anyone have knowledge about which eyepiece is compatible with the Fuji X system? Thank you in advance for any assistance and information you can provide.
    • I purchased a gently used XF 80mm f/2.8 aspherical macro for my X-T5. Not being familiar with this lens but having had experience with the Leica T mount 60mm macro and Canon and Zeiss macros, I was surprised that I felt what might be best described as a loose lens element that shifted when I tilted the lens, even before being mounted to the camera. In manual focus mode, the lens is fine, but there is a distinct “wobble” when the lens is in autofocus mode. I reported this to the company (I bought it from KEH), and they agreed this was odd and accepted it back for a full refund. I just got a replacement lens and the same thing is happening. I’ve never had an experience in which I feel a lens element loose inside the housing. Is this normal? Should I return it (again)?
    • Old post but hope this can help. You have to make sure that exp. comp. is set to zero in P, S or A mode before you go in to manual mode. If the comp is set to, let say +5, and this is of the range for the settings in manual mode, twisting the comp dial (left dial) want do any changes.
