Fuji XT 1 and X100t for production stills

Recommended Posts

Full disclosure: I'm a Canon shooter with a burning desire to switch to Fuji but can't justify it yet because I shoot a lot of video too. Hopefully soon.

I just got an inquiry to shoot production stills of a reality series. Does anyone have experience shooting production stills on set with Fuji and can you provide any insights. If they are quiet enough it would be such a better experience than working with a blimp on my 5D mkII. I'm thinking that I'd like to rent a XT1/56mm and a x100t. I've shot with both cameras before but didn't critically notice the sound of the camera.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Chris

I've never shot production stills when a blimp was required, but...

With Silent Mode : ON  and Electronic Shutter only enabled the camera makes no sound during operation.  Very minor AF noise from the lens (tested with the 18-55) - but you could shoot MF and kill it entirely.

Yeah, I thought about the electronic shutter but a friend told me you can get some distortion with movement. In silent mode it is probably pretty quiet.

I haven't found too much of an issue. I haven't used it shooting any serious movement, though, like sports or vehicles. The mechanical shutter of the X-T1 is still one of the more quiet I've used.

The leaf shutter on the X100T is essentially silent.

Another thing springs to mind: beware of lighting with the electronic shutter. Since the readout of the frame takes 1/15 second, any light flickering faster than that risk producing dark banding. I am thinking partly dimmed LED lighting. This could be an issue.

That said, the mechanical shutter nose is nowhere near the noise produced by my old Nikon D2hs or D3.
